Garment Care

With importation regulations changing over the past few years concerning the forever chemicals (like fluorocarbons) commonly used in DWR treatment of outdoor rain apparel—additional, after-purchase rain gear treatment may be required if you’re an angler who braves Mother Nature’s worst.

The reduction in or elimination of what were commonly used chemicals has made DWR treatment less effective. Plus, regular use and exposure to bug repellants, sunscreen, and other products can reduce the efficacy of standard DWR water repellency.

Even though rain garments are laminated and taped from the inside, new regulations have reduced the amount of rain protection companies are allowed to offer. The reality is, this has affected all outdoors enthusiasts’ ability to stay dry.

Years ago, anglers, hunters, and campers would spray leather boots and other items with Camp Dry and other products available for additional waterproofing. Given the recent change in regulations, this kind of treatment may also be required to create and extra level of DWR beyond what manufacturers are legally allowed to provide.

While Whitewater has gone the route of providing cutting-edge waterproof garment characteristics, the company still advocates using something like Granger’s or a wax treatment to provide additional water protection if you are repeatedly fishing big water or exposed to the harshest of elements when fishing, hunting, or camping.

How To Wash And Care For Your Whitewater Garments

We want you to prolong the life of your gear. So we encourage you to extend the life of your gear by giving it the proper wash and care. Our outerwear must be properly cared for and maintained to ensure the effectiveness of the garment. Over time you may notice your outerwear is no longer beading up water and may even start to soak up water. This is the main indicator that your garment requires care. To keep your outwear in good condition, treat with Grangers Performance Wash or Wash + Repel Clothing 2 In 1.

Benefits Of Rain Gear Maintenance

Waterproof-breathable garments are pivotal components within our layering system, offering crucial protection during adverse weather conditions. Their performance can significantly impact outdoor activities, making proper care essential for longevity and optimal functionality. Neglected care can lead to a drop-off in rain gear performance.

Water Repellency

Every waterproof-breathable garment features a durable water-repellent (DWR) coating on its exterior fabric, encouraging water to bead and roll off. However, abrasion, dirt, and extended moisture exposure gradually diminish the effectiveness of the DWR. Reapplication of DWR treatment, typically once per season, is vital for maintaining optimal performance.

DWR Care and Reapplication

Simple methods such as machine washing with tech-specific detergents like Grangers Performance Wash or using spray-on applications like Performance Repel Plus, can rejuvenate the DWR coating. Regular reapplication ensures water continues to bead off, preventing moisture absorption and maintaining breathability.

Breathability

Breathability distinguishes high-quality gear, yet it diminishes with use as sweat, dirt, and oils accumulate, obstructing ventilation. Routine washings with technical detergents like Grangers Wash + Repel Clothing 2 In 1, cleanse fabrics without hindering breathability. Proper washing after prolonged use preserves breathability and prolongs water repellency.

Component Maintenance

Waterproof-breathable fabrics comprise delicate layers bonded together with specialized adhesives. Seam tape, crucial for waterproofing, can deteriorate over time due to bacteria buildup. Quality seam tape ensures durability. Regular washing, avoiding excessive heat, maintains seam tape integrity.

Conclusion

Whether investing in new gear or maintaining existing pieces, prioritizing cleanliness and DWR rejuvenation is paramount. These simple steps guarantee sustained performance and durability, ensuring your waterproof-breathable investments endure season after season.

Tips For Washing Your Outerwear

  • Do not use conventional detergents.
  • Run the rinse cycle one time on your washing machine before adding your item to rinse the remaining conventional detergent residue from the washer. These detergents clog the tiny pores that allow your outerwear to breathe.
  • Empty pockets, close all zippers and Velcro.
  • Select the "Extra Rinse" cycle on the washing machine if available.
  • Follow instructions on garment care labels and aftercare products.

Tips For Drying Hard And Soft Shells

  • Line dry or tumble on low setting if the care label allows. The warm air in the dryer reactivates the items' DWR.
  • If you line-dry your gear, the DWR can also be reactivated by using an iron to warm the fabric. Be sure to place a towel or other fabric between the iron and your outerwear item.

Things To Avoid

  • Bleach: Fades colors and can damage DWR waterproof coatings.
  • Fabric Softener: Clogs the pores of technical fabrics and can damage waterproof coatings, minimizing the waterproof/breathability rating.
  • Iron: The heat may damage technical fabrics, potentially melting your garment. As stated above, be sure to place a towel or other fabric between the iron and your outerwear item.
  • Dry Cleaning: Products used to dry clean could damage the technical features of your garment.
